Have you seen the new Trimble V10?


Last year, all of the buzz at Intergeo was about the new Trimble R10 GNSS System. While that solution has been updated this year to include tilt compensation and CenterPoint RTX correction service support, much of the buzz this year is about the new Trimble V10 Imaging Rover, which works with the Trimble R10.

The Trimble V10 Imaging Rover with Trimble VISION™ technology is an integrated camera system that precisely captures 360 degree digital panoramas for efficient visual documentation and measurement of the surrounding environment. Either standalone or combined with a Trimble VX™ Spatial Station, S-Series Robotic Total Station or Trimble R10 GNSS receiver, the Trimble V10 Imaging Rover provides the means to quickly capture rich data and create comprehensive deliverables. Together with Trimble Access™ field software on the Trimble Tablet Rugged PC and Trimble Business Center office software, the Trimble V10 is the complete geospatial solution.

With all of the buzz about the V10, don't forget about Trimble Business Center! Use the enhanced photo point measurement functionality in Trimble Business Center to measure and create points, lines, polygons and other imaging components which can be used to prepare rich deliverables for GIS, engineering and survey applications. Both automated and manual processes are available for data processing resulting in greater user control while integrated quality control features that also speed up office processing times for increased efficiency.

As a completely new solution, many people wonder how it can be used. Here are some ideas:

  • Geospatial Documentation: The Trimble V10 provides urban planners, GIS professionals, asset managers and other geospatial professionals with the means to capture images in the field and build a clean, comprehensive dataset back in the office.
  • Survey: Unlocks a whole new workflow to complete traditional survey work such as design surveys. with the Trimble V10, the job starts with capturing panoramas of the site, something now easily accomplished with Trimble VISION at the rod. The panoramas are then used to create positions for standard survey features in Trimble Business Center.
  • Oil & Gas: Features in oil and gas facilities, such as pipe racks, valves, and  flanges, can often be difficult or time consuming to accurately capture in 3d using traditional methods. The Trimble V10 offers a solution to this challenge by enabling these professionals to take a picture, complete with details and georeferenced positions, of these objects quickly. Not only are all of the features captured, but  you also can provide a new deliverable to the client.
  • Site Visualization: The ability  to see an entire project location, job site or area of interest AND measure its spatial relationship is critical. Whether for project planning, inspections or investigations, the V10 provides a previously unavailable visualization capability. May 2013 Wrap-Up - TBC 3.0, TA 2013.10, and Firmware Updates


This month, we announced several product updates. Here is your May wrap-up:

Trimble Business Center 3.00 and Photogrammetry Module 

Based on state-of-the-art technology from Inpho, version 3.00 also introduces a new photogrammetry module for importing and working with flight data and images collected from the Gatewing X100, and Trimble VISION™ instruments , such as the Trimble S8 Robotic Total Station. Surveyors can produce deliverables, including orthophotos, 3D point clouds and digital surface models directly from Trimble Business Center.

Additional new functionality in Trimble Business Center 3.00 includes:

  • 64-bit Processing - With 64-bit processing, surveyors in the office can utilize all of their computer's RAM to display large images and point clouds for increased visualization functionality.

  • Display Large Images Seamlessly - Images "tile" automatically on import and the displayed resolution adjusts seamlessly as users zoom in and out for superior image viewing.

  • Updated User Interface - An updated ribbon menu featuring new icons, enhanced tool tips and increased help and tutorials to improve the overall user experience within the software suite.

  • Beidou Post-Processing - Trimble Business Center now supports Beidou for post-processing applications.

Trimble Access 2013.10

Trimble Access 2013.10 offers new functionality, including:

  • BeiDou Satellite Support: The Chinese BeiDou satellite system is now supported in RTK and postprocessed surveys.

  • Tunnels Module Enhancements: Tunnel alignment templates can now be created with multiple surfaces, enabling display, stakeout and reporting to any one of the surfaces with ease. Multiple surface support simplifies the workflow when survey results for multiple surfaces, such as rock surface, reinforced steel mesh, shotcrete or the finished surface, are required.

  • Mines Module Enhancements: Multiple improvements to the Trimble Access Mines module make the workflows more powerful and flexible. Improvements include staking laser lines relative to a center line, stakeout delta display, laser blinking at point storage, measuring rounds functionality including the ability to add points from measure rounds results directly to a CSV file.  

  • Circular Object Measurements: More accurately and easily determine the center and radius of circular objects using left and right tangent observations. From the left and right observations the servo instrument automatically turns to the middle, enables Direct Reflex (DR), and measures to the face of the object. The radius and center of the object are then computed.

Trimble Access 2013.10 is available for installation now. Users with a valid warranty as of May 1, 2013 can install Trimble Access 2013.10 by running the Trimble Access Installation Manager.

Process Aerial Data w/ TBC 3.00 and the new Photogrammetry Module


Photogrammetry is a key  buzz word in the geospatial industry these days. This technology allows survey companies to add to their value proposition and collect powerful data and produce valuable deliverables with images.

Today, Trimble introduced Trimble Business Center 3.00 and a new Photogrammetry Module, providing users the capability to process aerial imagery data collected with the Gatewing X100 and data captured using Trimble VISION instruments. TBC MonitorFront X100 Screen

The TBC photogrammetry module is based on state-of-the-art Trimble Inpho technology, known for 30 years of digital aerial photogrammetry leadership. For the TBC photogrammetry module, Inpho technology has been customized to the specific requirements of Gatewing systems. The incorporation of specialized computer-vision algorithms produces very accurate results automatically, with minimal manual interaction. This provides a stable and reliable photogrammetric system delivering excellent results without requiring specialized photogrammetry knowledge or experience. 

Adjust Aerial Photo Stations

The aerial triangulation process adjusts the aerial photo stations, automatically finding matching tie points in overlapping images to correct their relative positions and orientations.  Easily register ground control points (GCP’s) to correct the absolute position and scale of the photo stations. Image adjustment is executed automatically with a single mouse click, requiring only 10 seconds per image to process (incl. camera refinement) and achieving an average re-projection error of about 1 pixel.

Automatically matched tie-points are distributed densely over the complete project, even in challenging low-texture terrain. Additional features such as full camera calibration, automatic quality assurance and blunder removal are available to ensure result quality.

TBC’s “virtual telescope” intersects points from multiple aerial photo stations and/or terrestrial Trimble VISION photo stations to enable measurement of discrete points. Accurately and efficiently measure the locations of features including buildings corners, tree-tops, and utilities.

Create 3D Point Clouds

Automatically create 3D point clouds from adjusted photo stations.  Based on 25 years of technology evolution, TBC’s point cloud generation algorithms are based on state-of-the-art Inpho dense matching and DTM generation software. The fully automatic process adapts parameters to guarantee precision, providing extremely detailed and accurate results at a speed of about 3 sec. per image with about 1-2 pixels height accuracy.

Create Raster Digital Surface Models

Automatically create 3D digital surface models from adjusted photo stations.  A raster DSM created from the generated point cloud is refined using sophisticated interpolation routines, noise filtering, edge modeling and outlier detection to achieve rich detail within surface models.

Create Digital Orthophotographs

Automatically create ortho-rectified, georeferenced mosaics from adjusted photo stations. Rigid “True-Ortho” rectification combined with outstanding geometric feature-based seamline-finding and radiometric balancing result in perfect looking seamless ortho-mosaics. Seams are adaptively blended according to image texture analysis. Radiometric single image corrections as well as image group corrections are applied for perfect homogeneous colors and intensity, ready for GIS use. The automatic process only takes about 4 seconds per image.

Trimble Survey - 2012 Year in Review


2012 was a fun and exciting year for Trimble Survey.  We joined forces first with Gatewing and then with SketchUp, launched a groundbreaking new receiver with the Trimble R10, broke ground on a new campus and continued to provide surveyeors solutions from the field to the office.  Here is a look back at the highlights of 2012.

April 6thTrimble acquires Gatewing to Expand its Survey Solutions to Include Aerial Mapping.  Gatewing is a provider of lightweight unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) for photogrammetry and rapid terrain mapping applications. The acquisition broadens Trimble’s industry-leading platforms for surveying solutions.

April 23rdTrimble’s Survey Software Improves Productivity for the Office and Field with Trimble Business Center version 2.70 and Trimble Access software version 2012.10.  The software is part of Trimble's portfolio of Connected Site® survey solutions. The new software enhancements allow surveyors to collect, share and deliver data faster to improve accuracy, efficiency and productivity. 

April 26thTrimble Enhances it’s Office-to-Field Platform with the Acquisition of Google’s SketchUp 3D Modeling Platform. SketchUp is currently used by millions of users annually—ranging from architects to engineering and construction firms to building and design professionals—for designing, modeling and visualizing projects.

May 14thTrimble Broke Ground for New Rockies Colorado Campus. Trimble's new Rockies campus will be a 125,000 sq. ft., 4-story building on 15 acres in the Westmoor area of the City of Westminster, located at 10368 Westmoor Drive. It will house existing employees, with space to accommodate up to 570 employees. The expected completion is May 2013. 

Aug 31stTrimble and FARO Sign OEM and Distribution Agreement for 3D Laser Scanners. Under the agreement, FARO will provide Trimble with an OEM differentiated product based upon its successful FARO Laser Scanner Focus3D platform. Trimble will offer the OEM product throughout its worldwide survey and building construction distribution networks, serving the needs of surveyors, contractors, engineers and geospatial professionals. As part of the strategic relationship, future versions of the FARO Laser Scanner Focus3D platform will also be made available to Trimble.

Oct 9thTrimble Introduces Next Generation GNSS Surveying Solution with the Trimble R10.  As the smallest and lightest receiver in its class, the Trimble R10 combines powerful features and groundbreaking technologies including Trimble HD-GNSS, Trimble SurePoint™, Trimble 360, and Trimble xFill™ to provide surveyors increased productivity. User-friendly features such as a quick-release adaptor and the ability to configure the receiver from a smart phone make it easy to deploy and use as a base station or rover.

Oct 9thTrimble Introduces Next Generation Software for Unmanned Aerial Systems including Trimble Gatewing Data.  It features the ability to automatically create an Inpho project from Trimble Gatewing data. As a result, UAS users, particularly Trimble Gatewing customers, will gain access to the high-quality photogrammetric processing that Inpho has offered within aerial survey for more than three decades.

Oct 9thTrimble Introduces Trimble TX5 Laser Scanner and New Version of Trimble RealWorks Version 7.2 Software.  The Trimble TX5 is a highly versatile 3D laser scanning solution for surveyors, building construction and civil contractors, performing a variety of applications such as capturing existing condition information, retrofit/revamp projects, architectural redesign, clash inspections and design/as-built comparisons. 

Nov 5thTrimble Adds Post-Processing Capability to CenterPoint RTX Positioning Services.  The new post-processing capability delivers better than one-centimeter accuracy and is available worldwide.

Nov 5thTrimble Expands RTX Satellite Coverage Enabling Trimble xFill for Surveyors.  RTX technology enables Trimble xFill, a new technique in RTK and VRS surveying that allows surveyors to continue working in the event the primary RTK or VRS correction stream is not available.  The expanded satellite coverage now includes most of Europe, Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States, Africa, Asia and Australasia.

  1. Trimble SketchUp support – Import model data contained in a Trimble SketchUp (.skp) file into your project. Export Trimble SketchUp (.skp) files that you can be used in conjunction with SketchUp models.
  2. ArcMap 10.1 support - Export Geodatabase (.xml) files and Esri Shapefiles(.shp/.shx/.dbf/.prj) to ArcMap version 10.1.
  3. Fully translated Help – New version 2.80 topics in the Trimble Business Center online Help have been translated into your installed language.
